Gioco del Ponte (the Bridge Battle - Ponte di Mezzo) is held in the last Sunday in June and it stands out as one of the oldest traditions in Pisa, dating back to the Middle Ages, though a notable contribution to the promotion of this event pertains to the Medici family. The bridge hosting some of the parts of the event is Ponte di Mezzo, Pisa’s Roman Bridge, and the manifestations consist mainly of battles and competitions which enable the confrontation of the two main districts of Pisa, Mezzogiorno and Tramontana, each of them being represented by a duly trained team. Besides the battles as such, the event implies the pushing of a seven ton carriage across Ponte di Mezzo. What is notable about the festival is it revives a certain medieval dash of the city and of its inhabitants, wearing medieval costumes being still a prerequisite characteristic of this event.
